More Than Just My Work

When I am not singing along to Broadway musical tunes with my two young-adult daughters, I am either running in the trails of North Vancouver (where I have lived my entire life!), listening to records in my living room, reading the latest fiction novel or cuddling with my cat by the fireplace. My partner and I love to travel when we can and I’m working on becoming a better cook – stay tuned!

Jenifer Barsky, BA

Intern Counsellor (Master of Counselling Student with City University)

You are constantly being told you have to be strong, keep your emotions to yourself, and figure out challenges on your own. The truth is, it helps to connect with someone to talk through what you’re feeling. You shouldn’t have to manage the difficulties in your life by yourself. Together, we will develop strategies to help you cope with stresses, understand and embrace emotions and build confidence to move forward in life.

Whether you’re a young person struggling with anxious feelings about school, your identity or peer relationships or an adult trying to keep balance in life or navigate transitions such as divorce or an empty nest, I’m here to support you. My approach is to create a warm, inclusive space where you feel like you can be your authentic self. Through client-centered, strength-based approaches, I will listen without judgment to your story, understanding that you are the expert in your own life. Together, we will recognize and respond to patterns that are preventing you from living the life you want to live.

In my work as a high school teacher, the most rewarding part has been supporting young people and colleagues through challenges and obstacles. I have been told I’m a good listener and that I have a calm, reassuring presence. I’m excited to be shifting into counselling, a direction that feels like a natural next step. I have a Bachelor of Arts in English and Human Geography, and a Masters in Education, where my research focused on how peer mentorship might improve the academic and social lives of struggling grade 9 reader/writers. Now, I am in the midst of completing a Masters in School Counselling at City University.

“Teachings come from everywhere when you open yourself to them. That’s the trick of it really, to open yourself to everything and everything opens itself to you.”

My own experiences with counselling have shown me that even though asking for support can feel scary, it has helped me to have someone truly listen to my concerns and worries, without judgement. This is what I can offer you: a space where you can be yourself, speak openly about how you’re feeling, and work with me to create strategies for how to move forward. I know that being a young person these days is tough. I also know that being an adult these days is tough! Sometimes simply getting through your day can feel overwhelming. Let’s slow down, process feelings, talk about options and come up with a plan for change.
